KATE Update Goes Back to School!
This year marked my 33rd first day of school, and each first day of school I meet with various degrees of excitement, determination, and trepidation. This time of year is filled with nearly endless possibilities. Alas, another month of summer vacation is not one of those possibilities for those who wish to continue gainful employment.
My friends who are not teachers always give me curious looks when I say that I’m looking forward to the beginning of the school year, even though it means the end of my summer vacation. I’m extremely lucky that my profession allows me the luxury of being able to spend most of the summer with my daughter, and as much as I love spending time with my 3-year-old, towards the end of the summer I start to miss spending time with my other “kids”.
I teach freshmen, so I see them through their momentous first day. They are nervous, tentative, and generally clueless as to what is going on. I am able to identify, because their confusion mirrored mine from when I was a novice teacher. I’m reminded of my first day of school, and especially my first day of high school, when possibilities were seemingly endless.
Now is the perfect time to get different perspectives on the first days of school, which is why KATE Update is starting its first “Back to School Week” This week we will be featuring a variety of teachers, from pre-service to experienced, giving their thoughts as we welcome in the new school year. I hope that you enjoy and gain something from the stories we will share this week.
